Radio Poet Manuel

Hear a different poet at 7:49 a.m. Monday - Thursday throughout the month of April, which is National Poetry Month. Today's poet is Manuel reading, "Soccer." National Poetry Month was originally organized by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.

For several years KALW has partnered with America Scores and the San Francisco United School District to bring you original poems written by young students and read on the air in their own voice.

Soccer, by Manuel

My love is like a soccer game

The field is my life

I am a player in the field

The ball is my heart and the goal is in me

My teammates are my bros

And together we share the dreams

I’ll keep hitting the keeper’s net

Until I meet my goals

Kevin Vance created a program of folk music for KALW, A Patchwork Quilt, in October 1991. He grew up in Berkeley during the 1960s and '70s and spent his years learning in public schools, community colleges, bookstores, libraries, and non-commercial radio stations, as well as from the people around him. When he's not on the radio, then he's selling books, taking care of his family, listening to music, entering stuff into a computer, or taking a class.
