This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with the members of the Costanoan Trio (Derek Tam, fortepiano; Cynthia Black, violin; Frédéric Rosselet, cello), which opens the new season of the San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS), with concerts in Palo Alto, Berkeley and San Francisco.
The Costanoan Trio, which takes its name from an 18th-century Spanish word for the indigenous peoples of the San Francisco Bay Area, explores piano trio repertoire of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The program includes trios by the four great composer-pianists of that era — Haydn, Mozart, Clementi and Beethoven. Concerts are on September 20 (8pm) at the First Presbyterian Church in Palo Alto; on September 21 (7:30pm) at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Berkeley ; and on September 22 (4pm) at the Church of the Advent in San Francisco.
Derek Tam, who has recently been appointed executive director of SFEMS, will also preview the rest of the Society’s new concert season.
We talk to executive director Robert Martin and Board Chair Peggy Haas about the programming for the newly restored Presidio Theatre, on the Main Post of San Francisco’s historic Presidio, which opens to the public as a performing arts center on Saturday, September 21.
Built as an Army movie theater in 1939, the space opens its doors for the first time in 24 years, after a $30 million renovation. It has been transformed into a 600-seat proscenium theatre with state-of-the-art technical equipment for dance, theatre, music, and film, with a pavilion and courtyard for events, a large rehearsal space and other amenities.
We talk to artistic director Raissa Simpson and participating choreographer David Herrera about the 6thannual PUSHfest Dance Festival, on September 20-22 at ODC Theater in San Francisco.
