This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area Performing Arts in Times of Corona, host David Latulippe talks with members of conductorless chamber orchestra One Found Sound about the start of their Fall Season; Peter Robinson discusses political protest songs through the ages; and we raise the virtual curtain of Open Air’s Corona Radio Theater for Episode 7 of the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s summer podcast series Tales of the Resistance.
The seventh installment of Tales of the Resistance, a nine-part series of original political comedy radio plays by the San Francisco Mime Troupe, picks up the continuing story of MAGA hat wearing, right-wing immigrant Primo, brought to you ‘Horror-style’.
Previously, The Good Cop showed Primo tormented by his racist fears and haunted by his hate, while caught in a protest for justice turned riot. In this week’s episode, The Rotten Orchard, we find out whether or not Primo can come to grips with his haunted past. Will he be able to be more than just a good cop? Tune in this Thursday.
From SF-based conductorless chamber orchestra One Found Sound, we talk with co-founder/clarinetist Sarah Bonomo, and co-founder/flutist Sasha Launer, about the opening of the ensemble’s Fall 2020 Season, starting on October 1 with a Virtual Watch Party.
On the program works by three works by Black composers: Valerie Coleman’s Umoja for wind quintet, William Grant Still’s Lyric Quartette for strings, and the world premiere of Por Seis: 3 Latin-American studies for six instruments, by Texas-based composer Quinn Mason, who joins the conversation on Open Air.
For the Watch Party, which starts at 6pm, musicians will pre-record the pieces together at a safe social distance, and the broadcast will feature creative music videos of each work, a live chat with the musicians, and a live conversation with Quinn Mason about his world premiere.
Plus, Open Air regular contributor and critic at large, Peter Robinson, discusses three political song parodies and reflects on how these songs captured the spirit of the 60’s and the 70's, periods of great change, to today, another time of upheaval.
