This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the performing arts in the Bay Area, host David Latulippe talks with Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk, who sings the part of Santuzza in the San Francisco Opera production of Cavalleria Rusticana, which opens on Friday, September 7.

Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana is presented in the traditional double billing with Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci. The Italian conductor Daniele Callegari makes his company debut with this production. Performances run through September 30.

We talk with coordinator Katrina McGraw from San Francisco Playhouse, about their ‘Rising Star’ program, a theater attendance program for local high school kids. Two former participants of program, Quinnton Barringer and Kaya Lehr-Love, join the conversation. As recent graduates from Lincoln High School, they are producing their own version of the play ‘Ideation’ (by San Francisco based playwright Aaron Loeb), featuring a cast of all former Rising Stars, on September 6 & 7, and 13 & 14 at Lincoln High School.

Playwright and performer Alicia Dattner stops by to share details about her standup comedy show One Life Stand - A Modern Girl’s Guide to enlightenment & Other Disorders. Together with her ukulele, she discusses sexy flossing, how to spot a narcissist in the wild, drinking at yoga, and many other things. One Life Stand runs through September 29 at The Marsh in Berkeley.

Plus, we check in via phone with Martin Seggelke, conductor and artistic director of the San Francisco Wind Ensemble, about the ensemble’s new season, which opens on September 15 (7:30pm) with a concert at Aragon High School in San Mateo (900 Alameda de las Pulgas). On the program music by Brett Abigana (Lux Contrapunctum), Ernst Toch (Spiel für Blasorchester, op. 39) and Ida Gotkovsky (Concerto for Wind Orchestra).

Open Air with host David Latulippe, heard live on Thursday, September 6 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
