This week on Open Air, host David Latulippe talks with 7-time Grammy Award-winning duo Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., the original lead singers of the internationally-renowned vocal group The 5th Dimension.
In town for only three performances at Feinstein's at the Nikko, McCoo and Davis will perform a musical tribute to the hits and productions that have encompassed their multifaceted 45-plus year careers, including various flavors of R&B, gospel, jazz, blues and pop. Concerts are Thursday, August 17 - 8 p.m.; Friday, August 18 - 8 p.m. and Saturday, August 19 - 7 p.m.
Also, a conversation with conductor and artistic director Robert Geary of the San Francisco Choral Society, to discuss their performances of Mendelssohn’s oratorio ‘Elijah’, this weekend at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, together with the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir and the California Chamber Symphony. Joining us in the studio is contralto Edith Dowd, member of the quartet of soloists, which also includes baritone Eugene Brancoveanu, tenor Brian Thorsett, and soprano Marnie Breckenridge. August 18 and 19 at 8pm.
And from the musical ‘Something Rotten’, we meet with Bay Area actors Juliane Godfrey and Kristie Kerwin, who are both cast members from the touring production of ‘Something Rotten!’, now through September 10 at the SHN Orpheum in San Francisco.
Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, ‘Something Rotten!’ is a hilarious musical comedy about brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom—two Renaissance playwrights who are desperate to write their own hit play while ‘rock star’ William Shakespeare keeps scoring all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical.
