Afropop Worldwide's "San Francisco: Afropop By the Bay" tells the unlikely story of how a group of superb African musicians-from Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa-landed in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s and early '80s. These included members of Hedzoleh Soundz from Ghana, brought to California by Hugh Masekela after Fela Kuti introduced Hugh to the band in 1973; also Nigerian maestros O.J. Ekemode and Joni Haastrup; and members of the South African touring theatrical show Ipitombi, who settled in the Bay Area and formed the band Zulu Spear.
Hear "Afropop By The Bay" on KALW Labor Day, Monday, September 7th at 7pm.
