A pinata-maker in the Excelsior District remembers his past life as a revolutionary; a peasant’s daughter journeys from a rural town in China to pursue the American dream in the Bay Area – these are just two of the local stories that will come to life at KALW’s Hear Here: A Night of Storytelling event on Saturday, October 13th at Public Works in San Francisco.
The event kicks off the annual literary festival LitCrawl, and is produced by KALW’s community storytelling team, Hear Here. The hour-long performance brings together artists of all kinds: a comedian, a radio producer, a musician, an emerging oral storyteller, and a live sketch artist. Together, they’ll illustrate the many tales unfolding in the Bay Area while audience members get to contribute their own surprise story at the end of the show.
The performance lasts from 6-7pm, with a pre-show mixer beforehand at 5pm. Hear Here’s “story tunnel” installation will be on display, featuring audio clips from Oakland and San Francisco residents (smartphones and headphones will be required to listen to these stories). Audience members are encouraged to come early to participate in a collaborative storytelling project, and stay for the surprise ending, which will be read aloud by popular science author Mary Roach at the end of the night.
