The Milk-Moscone Murders

Harvey Milk in His Own Words, and Why Dan White Killed Milk and Mayor George Moscone.

On tonight's call-in edition of Out in the Bay, meet journalist Mike Weiss and publisher Vince Emery. Weiss' book Double Play: The Hidden Passions Behind the Double Assassination of George Moscone & Harvey Milk is a gripping account of why Dan White did it and a riveting look at the modern history of San Francisco politics. Vince Emery, Double Play's publisher, also edited and published The Harvey Milk Interviews: In His Own Words, containing 39 revelatory interviews spanning the pioneering gay politician's career, from his first days as candidate to shortly before his assassination.  Join us at 7pm for a fascinating discussion about Harvey Milk, George Moscone, their killer and the political and other legacies of these three men.

Mike Weiss covered Dan White's double-murder trial and the White Night Riots for Time, Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Times. He was hooked, had to know more, spent years researching and writing, and the result is Double Play, which won an Edgar Award for Best True Crime Book of the Year. Weiss will delve into the details for us, and we'll even hear from White himself, as we play part of his chilling taped confession about the double murder.
Vince Emery, who has contributed research and articles for numerous books about San Francisco history and authors, curated and edited The Harvey Milk Interviews, published this May.  As Double Play publisher, Emery added a companion DVD to this new edition that contains TV interviews with Moscone and White, rare audio of White's confession, Dianne Feinstein's account of discovering Milk's body, and more.
