What To Do When Your Favorite Song Has Toxic Lyrics? Play It On Repeat.

Jules Indelicato is a Bay Area musician. They recently took part in the durational performance art project "Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy." For eight hours a day, three days in a row, 30 women and non-binary musicians played popular love songs on repeat.

"The point of the piece was, as you would listen to these songs that you grew up with, you really hold dear to yourself and others, you realize just how deeply the subliminal messages of toxicity and violence are woven into our culture."

Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy was created by Ragnar Kjartansson, who was commissioned by the foundation C Project.  You can see the full list of songs from the project here.

Magnolia McKay and sound designer Gabe Grabin won an award best feature from the Society of Professional Journalists of Northern California and best use of sound from the Public Media Journalists Association for producing this story. It originally aired on March 13, 2019.
