Last fall organizers and volunteers set up a women-run homeless community in East Oakland’s Brookfield neighborhood. They called it the Housing and Dignity Village. About 13 people moved onto a vacant lot that was public land. The City of Oakland threatened to evict them. Advocates went to court. KALW’s Jenee Darden visited this village and gives an update of the village and its residents.

They wanted a women-run encampment because sexual assault of homeless women is very high and access to resources when violated can be difficult.

KALW’s Jenee Darden visited this village and is here to give us an update.
