Sights & Sounds Weekly: 3/17/16

Eden Bassett Jones
Photographer, Brittani Sensabaugh

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Our guest is Brittani Sensabaugh: a photographer whose project, 222 Forgotten Cities, documents the beauty and struggle of daily life in marginalized communities of color across the U.S.

Sensabaugh told KALW’s Jen Chien about three cool arts events happening this week around the Bay.

DJs and live musicians enliven the 10th Street Amphitheater during Friday Nights @ OMCA with monthly music themes ranging from jazz and blues to country and world music.

Every Friday, Oakland Museum of California hosts Friday Nights @ OMCA, an evening of local music, food, art, culture and half-price admission. This week, 3/18, visitors can catch Off the Grid food trucks, live music by band, The Bar, hip hop dance instruction with Rama Hall, a screening of the movie Mele Murals about graffiti and Hawaiian culture,  an aerosol art demonstration and more.

SENSABAUGH: It’s amazing; There are unlimited things that you can do there!

Growing Our Souls, Building Our Soil: A Day of Vision in Action happens  on Saturday, 3/19, in Richmond. This community farm gathering and potluck is a part of a weekend-long celebration of activist, Grace Lee Boggs. Saturday’s event features garden work, family friendly activities, performers and speakers. Hosted by Urban Tilth, Movement Generation, and the Bay Area Grace Lee Boggs Memorial Celebration Planning Committee.

Lake Merritt Gazebo

On Sunday, 3/20, Poets at the Park happens at Oakland’s Lake Merritt. This gathering is an open-to-all opportunity for artists and writers to meet, work on pieces, get feedback and practice spoken word.

SENSABAUGH: Being out in nature puts you in a good mental state to express yourself.
