This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with New York-based artist Catherine Galasso about her new performance piece, Alone Together, created in collaboration with San Francisco-based composer Dave Cerf. Performances are on December 6, 7 and 8 (8pm), at ODC Theater (3153 17th St.) in San Francisco.
Alone Together is the third installment of Galasso’s multi-chapter performance series, Of Iron and Diamonds, inspired by Boccaccio’s 14th-century collection of tales, The Decameron. Galasso, who is a former resident artist at ODC Theater, created the piece specifically for ODC’s B.Way Theater, and she uses an all Bay Area cast. In Of Iron and Diamonds V3: Alone Together, she flips the orientation of the proscenium, placing the audience on the stage and the performers in the seats.
Also on the show is “retired" Chronicle sports columnist Chuck Nevius to talk about his show The Oakland Raiders, True Crime & Coming of Age in SF. In this show, which is directed by David Ford, Nevius reminisces about his move to San Francisco from a small newspaper in Colorado Springs, 38 years ago, and his consequent career covering, among other things, the Oakland Raiders, and the story of a shocking sexual assault case at the University of San Francisco. The Oakland Raiders, True Crime & Coming of Age in SF runs through December 15 at The Marsh (1062 Valencia St.) in San Francisco.
From the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC), we meet with artistic director Dr. Timothy Seelig to discuss Brassy and Sassy, a brand-new show celebrating the holiday season featuring the 250 men of the chorus and special guest, acclaimed coloratura soprano Marnie Breckenridge. The show is on December 7 (8pm) and 8 (2:30 and 8pm) at San Francisco’s Nourse Theater (275 Hayes Street) and it kicks off a series of Holiday concerts by the SFGMC throughout the month of December, in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Rohnert Park.
Plus, we talk to writer, actor and performer Don Reed, about That Don Reed Show- his own variety show featuring irreverent sketches, edgy stand-up, short films, and music. Described as a hilarious hybrid of SNL and In Living Color, with some touching beats of The Carol Burnett Show, That Don Reed Show runs through December 23 at The Marsh Berkeley Cabaret (2120 Allston Way).
