A scene from the clashes at the Unite the Right rally August 12, 2017 in Charlottesville.

On today’s edition of Your Call, we look back on Charlottesville by discussing Documenting Hate: Charlottesville, a FRONTLINE documentary that exposes how white supremacist groups continue to operate with impunity.

On August 12, 2017, a far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia turned deadly. Thirty-two-year-old Heather Heyer was killed after an alleged white supremacist plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters. DeAndre Harris, a young black man, was viciously beaten by a group of white supremacists. We’ll speak with journalist A.C. Thompson about the documentary and what he learned about these violent groups.

Guests:

A.C. Thompson, investigative reporter with ProPublica and PBS FRONTLINE correspondent for Documenting Hate: Charlottesville

Don Gathers, former chair of Charlottesville’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials and Public Spaces, deacon at Charlottesville’s First Baptist church, and founder of the Charlottesville chapter of Black Lives Matter
