Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Muralist, printmaker, educator, and activist Juana Aliciatold KALW’s Jeneé Darden about three fantastic arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.

Singer & guitarist Diana Gameros will be performing live in concert this Sunday paying tribute to mothers, grandmothers and family traditions.  Diana’s mother is traveling all the way from Mexico to sing with her for this one-night event and her grandmother will even be featured on saxophone and clarinet. It’s happening on Mother’s Day this Sunday evening at the Brava Theater Center in San Francisco.

The Jungleis the play taking everybody by storm right now. It’s the story about a refugee camp in Calais, France that was a community and home to people from all over the world. The Jungle is running at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco thru May 19th, so see it before it’s gone.      

“It looks extremely potent, timely, powerful, it’s got great reviews, and I’m so looking forward to it.”

The Group Art Exhibition Post-Colonial Survival Kit is a new art show exploring racism, marginalization, and colonization in the Pilipinex community. Work being featured includes tribal soil paintings, sculpture, installation, and media art. This exhibition is presented by Kularts and will run thru May at the Luggage Store in San Francisco. 

“We feel such a strong connection with Filipino culture in terms of being subjects of the same conquest in so many ways, and historically in terms of international domination we share a strong history.”

"Tell Her" by Juana Alicia

The Opening Reception for Juana’s upcoming exhibition The X'tabay, a Contemporary Vision: Graphic Works by Juana Alicia will be on Saturday, June 1st at Alley Cat booksin San Francisco.

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW. Jeneé has reported for NPR, Marketplace, KQED, KPCC, The Los Angeles Times, Ebony magazine, Refinery29 and other outlets. In 2005, she reported on the London transit bombings for Time magazine. Prior to coming to KALW, she hosted the podcast Mental Health and Wellness Radio.
