Audiograph's Sound of the Week: The Oakland Zoo

All week long we've been playingthis sound, and asking you to guess what exactly it is and where exactly in the Bay Area we recorded it.

This auditory guessing game is part of our new project, Audiograph, a crowd-sourced collaborative radio project mapping the sonic signature of each of the Bay Area’s nine counties. By using the sounds of voices, nature, industry, and music, Audiograph tells the story of where you live, and the people who live there with you. Every Thursday, we reveal the origins of that week's sound on Crosscurrents, and here in weekly blog posts.

Listen above for this week's answer...

SHANA JENSEN: We have four new baby goats. Behind you is little Norma Jean and little Jeffrey. And we have two more—little Cowboy and Maggie running around.

LAURA SAPONARA: Tell me what a typical day in the life is like for these little ones.

SHANA JENSEN: We come in at 8:00am, and they wake up, get a little breakfast and then we open these gates that you see right here. They run around in the yard before all the public gets here and they like to run and jump off the racks. Then they get a little bit more of a meal and then they usually take a good nap for a good part of the afternoon.

LAURA SAPONARA: And how do you find families and children in particular responding to these guys?

SHANA JENSEN: You know, they are responding so well. So many more people are coming in because of the press they've seen about them and they really want to get a good look at these baby goats. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people can come and have a personal experience with these goats. Some of them had met Annie when she was still running around in the yard with the other goats, and when they heard that she became a mom, a lot of people got really excited and wanted to come share that experience with her.

Congratulations to this week's winner, Alistair Clark. We'll have a new sound for you to guess and another chance to win on Saturday.
