Connecting the Dots: Afternoon edition for Thursday May 10, 2012

(Bay Citizen) // UC Berkeley has filed a trespass lawsuit against 14 people who they claim illegally occupied a tract of land in Albany for the past two and a half weeks. The protesters are calling their movement "Occupy the Farm" and are planting vegetables on the 10-acre parcel of land. The university says the lawsuit is meant to ensure that the trespassers, rather than taxpayers, will bear the expenses of damage to the land...

(SF Gate) // On Wednesday, California State University trustees voted that new presidents at CSU campuses can get up to a 10 percent salary raise, but only if it is funded by non-public foundation funds. Each campus has at least one foundation that typically raises money for private scholarships and campus events...

(Bay Citizen) // At a hearing yesterday, lawmakers said that California has more diploma mills than any other state in the nation. The Assembly Committee on Accountability and Administrative Review also highlighted a Bay Citizen investigation that found more than 130 post-secondary institutions are operating with expired state approvals...

(SF Gate) // Two Bay Area Democrats have introduced a plan to save 50 state parks that may close this year due to budget cuts. State Senators Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) and Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa)suggest giving the parks system over $40 million per year from other state programs. Those who question the proposal are concerned over its legality. The Senate budget subcommittee has tabled a vote on the plan until the governor updates his budget proposal next week…

(Sacramento Bee) // According to a study released today by the Internet Crime Complain Center, California led the country last year in cyber-crime complaints and dollar losses to victims. The types of complaints included romance scams and FBI related impostors. It is unclear why California topped the list, but broken down per capita, other states had more complaints of cyber crime.
