Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene. Anna Shneiderman, theater artist and Executive Director of Ragged Wing Ensemble, told KALW’s Jen Chien about three great events happening around the Bay this weekend.

Aggregate Space Gallery

Aggregate Space Gallery director Conrad Meyers and several organizers/curators of Oakland artist-run spaces past and present will discuss the struggles and rewards of their work. This event is part of a series of talks with different curators about operating art spaces in Oakland. It will take place at Aggregate Space from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11th.

SHNEIDERMAN: This show is kind of a response to the Ghost Ship fire, and it's really kind of highlighting Oakland artist-run spaces and the artists who run them and making sure they have some voice and some visibility.

"WHITE GUY ON ON THE BUS" is a play by Bruce Graham, presented by Theatre Aluminous. Ray, a wealthy white business executive, rides the bus through an impoverished black neighborhood and past the state penitentiary every Saturday. On his weekly ride Ray befriends Shatique, a young African American woman putting herself through school and struggling to raise a son on her own. When Ray finally reveals why he's riding the bus, the ties that bind them gradually unravel and explode in a complex web of race, privilege, and revenge. The play is taking place through March 11th at The Flight Deck, where Theatre Aluminous is a resident company.

SHNEIDERMAN: This play, it's a challenging play. It really brings up a lot of issues about race, and class, and gender. It's kind of like a gut punch.

"CEREMONY" is a theatrical fashion show utilizing poetry, music, dance, and costuming to highlight Black and Brown women. It is an anti-sex trafficking/anti-sexual assault production by Regina Evans. Sip and Uplift is being held to fund a performance of “CEREMONY” at the United Nations in New York and will feature performances from a number of women artists. The event will take place on Saturday, March 11th at 555 10th Street in Oakland.

SHNEIDERMAN: The impact of the whole thing is, basically, I feel like it turns the idea of a fashion show on its head, and it really brings out all these women claiming their own power and their own beauty.
