This week hair salons and pools were allowed to reopen in San Francisco. Some schools hope they’ll be next.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor London Breed gave an update about reopening schools in San Francisco.
“We’re hopeful if we are able to maintain the numbers we will get to a better place, and our schools will be able to reopen. This is progress. But it’s not enough and it’s not certain.”
At the end of August, some families applied to have their kids participate in community learning hubs, designed for students who may not have access to wifi or materials at home. And on Monday, those hubs began meeting.
Some private and charter schools in the city have begun applying to get a waiver to reopen. The city has a long list of guidelines that all schools must meet and they are currently conducting site visits to ensure there’s proper ventilation and enough space to physically distance.
Elementary schools may be able to open without a waiver in mid October, as long as they submit a safety plan, and adhere with the Department of Public Health’s regulations.
