Alameda County has issued new safety guidelines for assisted living facilities as the number of COVID 19 cases at nursing homes continues to rise.

Union City Councilmember Jaime Patino took to Facebook Monday night to announce that his 85-year-old grandmother had died at Hayward's Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center.

The San Jose Mercury News reportsthat it's the 10th COVID-19 related death at the center. Lawyers representing one of the families of the deceased are now calling for a criminal investigation.

A manager at Gateway didn't return a phone call for comment by the time we aired this story.

While this facility is being criticized for allowing an outbreak to occur, we are seeing a rise of COVID19 cases at nursing homes around the Bay.

Alameda County Public Health Officer Dr. Erica Pan orderedall group assisted living sites to adopt new measures to curb the spread of the virus - including that all workers must have their temperatures checked and non-one with Covid19-like symptoms can enter the facilities.

The rules are effective as of today.
