WEB EXTRA: Bob Gammon on journalist safety

East Bay Express

East Bay Express Editor Robert Gammon stopped by KALW's studios last week, and shared his thoughts about bias in the media, and controversy in Oakland's City Council.

In this web exclusive segment, Gammon shares his thoughts about the threats journalists face in the Bay Area and elsewhere in the world.

ROBERT GAMMON: It's tough to be a journalist for numerous different reasons, first and foremost journalism faces a lot of financial challenges and so there are far fewer journalists today than ever before, and so even finding a position within journalism is tough. And then obviously as we saw in France, journalists face dangers. It happened in Oakland a few years ago when a journalist Chauncey Bailey was assassinated for investigating a group essentially.

I joined KALW in 2004. As Executive News Editor and then News Director, I helped our news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. I've also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and have taught hundreds of audio producers. I served as interim Executive Director for nearly two years. My work is currently focused on creating original live events, programming, and building partnerships with like-minded organizations.
