Remembering September 11th in the shadow of the new Freedom Tower

The new building at One World Trade Center, better known as the "Freedom Tower," opened today in New York City. We thought that we would share some of our own recollections of September 11th, 2001 with you. By clicking on their names below, you can hear some memories from members of the KALW news crew.


Ali Budner was a twenty-year-old, studying abroad in Himachal Pradesh, in northern India.

Audrey Dilling was a seventeen-year-old high school student in San Jose, CA.

Ben Trefny was twenty-eight, and starting his radio career in San Francisco, CA.

Chris Hambrick, twenty-eight, was visiting her hometown of Detroit, MI.

Chris Hoff was twenty-one, attending school in Ithaca, NY.

Colin Peden was twenty-three, leaving Grapevine, TX for Eugene, OR.

Hana Baba was twenty-seven, living in Anandale, VA.

Isabel Angell was an eleven-year-old in Richmond, CA.

Judy Silber was thirty-six and living in Kensington, CA

Julie Caine was thirty-three and living in San Francisco, CA.

Liz Mak was a thirteen-year-old going to school in Los Angeles, CA.

Rachel Dornhelm was twenty-six and living in New York City. 

Sandhya Dirks was twenty-three and living in Boston, MA (this audio is slightly NSFW).

Ted Muldoon was a twelve-year-old living in Saint Paul, MN.
