Cannabis News Roundup: January 18, 2013

(ASA) // Advocacy group Americans for Safe Access is claiming a court victory after the California Supreme Court this week “denied depublication” of a closely watched cannabis dispensary case from San Diego. One element: the Attorney General argued that members of cannabis collectives had to contribute in some manner to the cultivation of the cannabis they purchase. The court did not agree.

(Financial Times) // Last week we included an editorial from the Wall Street Journal titled “Have We Lost the War on Drugs?”  This week we include comments that appeared in the Financial Times, the British equivalent of the WSJ, titled “Fighter in a futile war.” It’s a conversation with Eugene Jarecki, director of “The House I Live In,” a documentary about the American war on drugs that aired on the BBC January 14. Jarecki is quoted as saying that it’s not enough that the drug war has been completely ineffective, but “it has spawned injustice.”

(The Atlantic) // And money spent on a single prosecution in the drug war “can easily run more than $1,000,000,” according to this article.

(SFGate) // Our neighbor to the south, Mexico, plans a new approach in their bloody war on drugs (60,000 deaths in six years). Enrique Pena Nieto, the new president of Mexico, is said to be considering “violence-reduction over drug interdiction.”

(KALW) // In case you missed it, here’s a link to a piece that aired this week on “Crosscurrents.” Dale Gieringer, director of the California office of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), talks about the history of drug laws in our state. Cal NORML has a weekend workshop scheduled January 26 and 27 in San Francisco, marking the centennial of cannabis prohibition in California.

(Reason.com) // If Miss Iowa were making the rules, Americans would only use cannabis for recreation and health reasons. That about covers it!  Here’s her statement at this week’s Miss America contest.
