On this edition of Your Call, we're speaking with best-selling author and Salon's Editor-At-Large D. Watkins about his new bookWe Speak for Ourselves: A Word from Forgotten Black America.
Watkins writes about the experiences of poor Black Americans typically sidelined by the public and the media—including his own life story. He says in order for the lives of Black people living in poor communities to improve, they need to be heard.
He writes, "Of all the Black narratives stacked on bookshelves, we have a problem. People from the streets are absent from them."
