Bay Area Beats: Del the Funky Homosapien

Bo Walsh
Del the Funky Homosapien

In 1991 Rapper Del the Funky Homosapien became the first member of Oakland’s Hieroglyphics hip-hop collective be introduced to the world with his debut album “I Wish My Brother George Was Here.” For Del, music has always been a family affair.

"I'm the type of person -- I like people to be able to feel me and see me, you know what I'm saying? 'Cause I feel like I represent them in a lot of ways."

As the younger cousin of Rapper and Actor Ice Cube, Del got his introduction to the music industry writing songs with his older cousin in the late eighties. In 2018 Del released his latest album, “Gate 13”, a collaboration with producer Amp Live.

For this edition of Bay Area Beats, Del came to the KALW studios to take us on a trip through his career and discuss the new project.
