Theater Rhino & Corona Radio Theater: The Battle of Britain - Volti’s 42nd Season - Robert Moses Kin

Wikimedia

This week on Open Air, KALW’s weekly radio magazine for the Bay Area Performing Arts in Times of Corona, we raise the virtual curtain of our Corona Radio Theater for a close look at London during the Blitz, with Theater Rhinoceros. Also, host David Latulippe talks with choral conductor Robert Geary and composer Danny Clay about their collaboration for vocal ensemble Volti’s 42nd season; and with choreographer Robert Moses, about the 25th Anniversary of his dance company, Robert Moses' Kin.

Theater Rhinoceros is the world’s longest-running continuously producing professional queer theater, founded in San Francisco in 1977. In their third appearance on the virtual stage of the Corona Radio Theater they will be presenting The Battle of Britain, a new radio play by John Fisher; with Gene Mocsy, Christine U’Ren and John Fisher -- In the blackened streets of the Blitz, two men find each other. But one of them turns out to be a spy...

From professional vocal ensemble Volti, we talk with founder and artistic director Robert Geary, and with composer Danny Clay, about the ensemble’s 42nd season of “singing without a net”.

This year’s program is all on-line and consists of free cocktail-hour concerts, featuring four premieres from Bay Area composers. Says Geary: “Volti has been able to commission four wonderful composers — Anne Hege, Danny Clay, Joel Chapman, and Pamela Z – to create music especially designed for online rehearsal and presentation. (..)  Danny Clay is currently rehearsing his new piece with the singers.”

The second concert of the Volti’s virtual season, with Clay’s new composition, is on December 19 at 5:30pm. Drawing upon his experience as an educator creating improvisational musical activities with kids and adults alike, Clay's piece will take the format of a virtual ‘game show’ in which members of the chorus are faced with a series of musical challenges to complete.

Plus, we talk to choreographer Robert Moses about the 25th Anniversary of the dance company of which he is founder and artistic director: Robert Moses’ Kin (RMK).

In order to mark this 25th Anniversary, RMK had to pivot to online programming. Under the title RMK Around the Bay, the company has premiered five original video works since March, including a major fundraiser for SF Unified School District, and has expanded into RMK Around the USA, with Moses engaging with dancers from around the USA.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, December 10 at 1pm. Archived at this location afterward. Listen now or anytime…
