Cellist Oliver Herbert - NCCO New Season - Ubuntu Theater Project - Mill Valley Film Festival

This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with young San Francisco cellist Oliver Herbert (pictured), who makes his subscription concert debut with the San Francisco Symphony, playing Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major. Performances are on September 26, 27 and 28 (8pm) at Davies Symphony Hall (201 Van Ness Ave) in San Francisco.

Combining the Classical and the Neo-Classical, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas presents the Haydn concerto together with three works by Igor Stravinsky: Canticum Sacrum; the Symphony in Three Movements; plus the kaleidoscopic three-movement choral masterpiece, Symphony of Psalms, with the SF Symphony Chorus.

Oliver Herbert, who graduated from the  SF Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2014, will also perform in the September 29 Chamber Series concert at Davies Hall. On the program, among others, Dvořák’s String Sextet in A major

From the New Century Chamber Orchestra (NCCO), we meet with music director and concertmaster Daniel Hope, to discuss the ensemble’s new concert season, which opens with a series of concerts titled Fin de Siècle, in Berkeley (Sep 26), San Francisco (Sep 28) and San Rafael (Sep 29). On the program music from Elgar, Massenet, Strauss and Schoenberg, and American teenage piano sensation Maxim Lando and Daniel Hope together play Chausson’s Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings

Also stopping by are actors Cathleen Riddley and Victor Talmadge, and artistic director Michael Moran, from the Ubuntu Theater Project in Oakland. The ensemble presents Eugene O’Neill’s Tony- and Pulitzer Award-winning drama  Long Day’s Journey into Night.

Widely considered to be O’Neill’s  magnum opus and one of the finest American plays of the 20th century, Long Day’s Journey into Night follows the Tyrones - a family shaped by addiction, obsession, and regret - through a single day in August, as years of secrets begin to emerge. Long Day’s Journey into Night runs October 5 - 27 at Ubuntu’s new home, at Flax Art & Design (1501 Martin Luther King Jr Way) in Oakland.

Plus, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large, Peter Robinson, pays homage to Ken Burns’ PBS series on Country Music and offers a preview of the 42nd Annual Mill Valley Film Festival, which runs from  October 3 - 13.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, September 26 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime...
