HMS Pinafore @ The Lamplighters - Friction Quartet & Sarah Cahill - Cal Shakes: House of Joy

This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with Baker Peeples, resident music director of the Lamplighters Musical Theatre, about current performances of Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, in venues around the Bay Area.

Peeples, a longtime Lamplighter, will be joined by mezzo soprano Sonia Gariaeff, who plays the role of Buttercup in this production of HMS Pinafore; and soprano Jennifer Mitchell, who plays Josephine. The Lamplighters perform HMS Pinafore through August 25 in Walnut Creek, Mountain View, San Francisco and Livermore.

From the Friction Quartet, we talk with cellist Doug Machiz and violinist Otis Harriel about their upcoming performance at Old First Concerts on August 16 (8pm).

Together with pianist Sarah Cahill the ensemble gives the world premiere of Bay Area composer Max Stoffregen’s piano quintet The Gila: Mesa, River, and Mountain, inspired by the composer’s foot travels through Arizona and New Mexico.

Also on the program: Geoffrey Gordon’s ABACISCUS and the world premiere of Family Group with Alien, an inventive six movement string quartet from British composer Piers Hellawell.

Plus, from the California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) in Orinda, we talk with playwright Madhuri Shekar, about the world premiere of her play House of Joy

Set in a harem at the end of the Mughal Empire, in something like 17th century Delhi, House of Joy  is an action-adventure romance in which an imperial bodyguard risks her life to fight for what’s right, turning against everything she’s been raised to believe.

Performances are August 14 - September 1 at the Bruns Amphitheater, located at 100 California Shakespeare Theater Way, Orinda.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, August 8 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
