‘Archduke’ @ TheatreWorks - SFGMC: ‘Queens’ - Dresher & Davel: invented instruments

Kevin Berne

This week on Open Air, KALW’s weekly radio magazine for the Bay Area performing arts, host David Latulippe talks with actor Stephen Stocking (pictured, center), who plays the role of Gavrilo in the comic drama Archduke, by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, currently at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.

Archduke is a satirical play about the events surrounding the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, an event that launched World War I. Archduke runs through June 30 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts (500 Castro St.) in Mountain View.

From the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, we talk with director and conductor Tim Seelig, about the ensemble’s upcoming gay pride performances that commemorate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, in a show entitled Queens, featuring guest appearances from several of San Francisco’s celebrity drag queens. Performances are on Friday, June 21 (8pm) and Saturday June 22 (2:30 & 8pm) at the Sydney Goldstein (formerly Nourse) Theater (275 Hayes St.) in San Francisco.

In a conversation with guest host Sarah Cahill, composer, performer and instrument inventor Paul Dresher talks about his upcoming performances with percussionist Joel Davel, on June 15 (8pm) and 16 (3pm) at ODC Theater (3153 17th St.) in San Francisco.

The Dresher/Davel duo will play three extraordinary invented instruments: the four stringed 15-foot long Quadrachord, the seven stringed 10-foot long Hurdy Grande and the Marimba Lumina - Don Buchla’s electronic percussion invention. The program includes the premiere of a new work by Dresher as well as classic duo works such as Glimpsed From AfarMoving Parts and Joel Davel’s Out of Thin Air.

Plus, information about San Francisco Opera’s summer season, which includes productions of Bizet’s Carmen, Handel’s Orlando, and Rusalka, based on the same story that inspired The Little Mermaid, by Antonin Dvorak; and about the Other Minds Festival 24 which features the world premiere of Alameda-based composer Brian Baumbusch’s large-scale work The Pressure

Performing are the composer’s own Lightbulb Ensemble, San Francisco-based Friction Quartet, two organists, four singers, and a narrator, on Saturday June 15 (8pm), followed by a showcase of music by Franco-Russian microtonal composer Ivan Wyschnegradsky on Sunday, June 16 (7pm). Both concerts are at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater (701 Mission St.) in San Francisco.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; broadcast from tape on Thursday, June 13 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime...
