A Streetcar Named Desire ~ The Kilbanes: Weightless ~ Sirens - Songs from the Bay ~ Robert Stallman

This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area Performing Arts, host David Latulippe welcomes L. Peter Callender, artistic director of the African-American Shakespeare Company, and actress Jemier Jenkins, to discuss  the current AASC production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

The iconic, Pulitzer Prize winning play by American playwright Tennessee Williams is directed by Callender and stars Jenkins as Blanche Dubois.  A Streetcar Named Desire runs through March 18 at the Marines’ Memorial Theatre in San Francisco (609 Sutter Street).

Also stopping by are songwriting duo Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses, of the Oakland-based, theatrical rock band The Kilbanes, to share details about the world premiere of their new rock opera Weightless, now through March 18 at Z Space. Weightless is an adaptation of the story of Procne and Philomela found in Ovid’s Metamorphoses: two sisters bound by deep love are separated by a vengeful god and must travel across worlds to find their way back together.

From professional chamber choir Cappella SF, we meet with Grammy award winning conductor Ragnar Bohlin to talk about Sirens - Songs from the Bay, a concert of contemporary choral music, featuring the song cycle ‘Sirens’ by Mason Bates, and works by four Cappella SF singer/composers: Elliott JG Encarnación, Ben Jones, Elizabeth Kimble and Clayton Moser. This Sunday, March 11 (7:30 pm) at the Mission Dolores Basilica in San Francisco.

Plus, we hear from American virtuoso flutist Robert Stallman, about Romantic Impulses, his concert together with pianist Dmitriy Cogan, featuring works by C.P.E. Bach, Dvořák, Ravel, Jeanjean, and Taktakishvili; Friday, March 9 at 8pm at Old First Concerts (1751 Sacramento Street) in San Francisco.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, March 8 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
