‘Girls of the Golden West’ @ SF Opera ~ Cantata Collective ~ Bay Area Concert Calendar

This week on Open Air, host David Latulippe talks with baritones Ryan McKinny and Elliot Madore, and tenor Paul Appleby about their roles in the upcoming World Premiere of John Adams’ newest opera ‘Girls of the Golden West’ at San Francisco Opera.

With a libretto drawn from historical sources by director Peter Sellars, ‘Girls of the Golden West’ explores the true stories of pioneers during the 1850s in California. The opera is set in the historic mining camps of Rich Bar and Downieville, when California transitioned from territory to American statehood, a period which coincided with the Gold Rush and its unprecedented migration of people from around the world, seeking their fortune.

‘Girls of the Golden West’ opens on November 21 and runs through December 10.

Also visiting in the studio is baroque oboist Marc Schachman, to discuss Cantata Collective, a new professional music ensemble that includes members of the New Esterházy Quartet and is entirely dedicated to the performance of the Cantatas of J.S. Bach.

The next concert of Cantata Collective’s inaugural season is on November 26at the Saint Mary Magdalen Church in Berkeley and features countertenor Reginald Mobley in Cantatas BWV 54 "Widerstehe doch der Sünde" and BWV 170 "Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust."

Plus, we will update you on upcoming concerts and performances in the Bay Area.

Open Air with host David Latulippe; heard live on Thursday, November 16 at 1pm. Listen now or anytime…
