For the past five years, Chike Nwoffiah has put together the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, which screens and celebrates films from fifteen different African countries. Nowadays, it's become more than a film fest; This year there's an African market, a visual arts exhibit, and a forum that features African women who work in tech. Nwoffiah hopes all this will help festival-goers understand the complexity of the continent.
KALW's Hana Baba talked to Nwoffiah about his beginnings in film.
CHIKE NWOFFIAH: A picture is worth a thousand words, and if you imagine that a picture is one frame of video, and one second of video is thirty frames, then you can begin to imagine what a hour of film is worth- such is the power of film. Through film, environments are created for you to access information and also empathize and understand. When one sees our films, they leave the experience with this phenomenal understanding and appreciation of Africa and Africans.
