Beginning today, nine million federal government employees are eligible for improved mental health benefits. The new insurance arrangements mean equal protection: treatment for mental illness will be on the same basis as physical ailments. Mental health advocates have long been campaigning for improved coverage arguing that the widespread practice of providing less insurance for mental disorders is discriminatory. During the election campaign, both George W. Bush and Al Gore endorsed the notion of equal treatment. NPR's David Molpus reports.
