Ever since high school, people have pronounced Irma Herrera’s name wrong. When she'd correct their pronunciation, they'd ask where she was from, as if it was a foreign name. “I’m a fifth generation South Texan,” she’d say.
Herrera’s new one woman play, “Why would I mispronounce my own name?”, explores her struggle with people’s perception of her over time and her identity in multicultural America. Herrera spoke with KALW’s Hana Baba about the play.
The show plays through December 8 at The Marsh in San Francisco.
