Kamala Harris kicks off presidential run with Oakland vibe

Twenty thousand people poured into Downtown Oakland to kick off Senator Kamala Harris' presidential run. She was born in Oakland and served as Alameda County’s Deputy District Attorney back in the '90s.

However, Senator Harris is better known for being the former District Attorney of San Francisco.

So why start her campaign in Oakland, aside from it being her hometown?

"Initially I was surprised she launched her campaign in Oakland, and not San Francisco where she was District Attorney. But Oakland's popularity outside of California has boomed."

KALW's East Oakland reporter Jenee Darden was in the thick of the rally scene where she spoke with voters. She talks about what she saw, the significance of the music she heard, and other possible reasons why Harris' started her election trek in Oakland.

Jeneé Darden is an award-winning journalist, author, public speaker and proud Oakland native. She is the executive producer and host of the weekly arts segment Sights & Sounds as well as the series Sights + Sounds Magazine. Jeneé also covers East Oakland for KALW.
