The Spot: Changing Colors in Comics

Shannon Wright for NPR
NPR’s Code Switch introduces us to artists and publishers in the comics industry who are taking a stand for greater diversity.";

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

Changing Colors in Comics,” from the NPR podcast Code Switch, April 2017.

Code Switch is a team of journalists at NPR who analyze the overlapping themes of race, ethnicity and culture, and how they play out in our lives and communities. Since these overlaps are continually shifting in media, they also do quite a lot of reporting on television, music, and in this episode, comics. It’s a great overview of how the comics industry runs today, as well as an important cultural critique on how the readership’s diversity is and isn’t accurately represented within it.

Follow Code Switch’s blog and listen to past episodes at their website. You can also subscribe to their podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, and wherever else you like to listen to podcasts.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, Cold Grits, and Heidelinde Weis.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
