1944: Keyboardist, songwriter, singer, producer and notable early architect of New Orleans funk and soul, Willie Tee, was born on this day. He passed away in September of 2007.

1971: Marvin Gaye's critically acclaimed 'What's Goin' On' was released on this day. It went on to reach number two on the pop charts and number one on the R&B charts.

1945: The first African American Playmate, Jennifer Jackson, was born on this day in Chicago. The 5-foot-8 bunny was also the first black model to be featured in an ad for Lady Clairol, the first black woman to model for Avon cosmetics and Kool cigarettes

1945: Bob Marley was born on this day in the village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. He passed away on May 11, 1981

1950: Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and actress Natalie Cole, was born on this day in Los Angeles, Ca.

1956: The Defender became The Chicago Daily Defender, the largest black-owned daily in the world. The Chicago Defender, which was founded by Robert S. Abbott on May 5, 1905, once heralded itself as "The World's Greatest Weekly."

1957: Actor, film director, writer and producer Robert Townsend was born on this day in Chicago, IL.

1958: Percussionist, composer, producer, vocalist and jazz Drummer, Rayford Griffin, was born on this day in Indianapolis, IN.

1960: R&B singer, pianist and songwriter, Jesse Belvin, died in a car crash on this day in Hope, Arkansas. He co-wrote one of the biggest hits of the 1950's “Earth Angel,” a hit for The Penguins in 1955. He was 28 years old.

1960: Gene Alford , lead singer of The Four Knights gospel group, passed away on this day. The group performed pop and doo-wop in addition to gospel.

1964: Writer, director and former actor Brandon Hammond was born on this day. His role in Soul Food as Big Momma's loving grandson, Ahmad, who only wanted to see his family get back together won over audiences everywhere.

1988: Public Enemy made their chart debut with 'Bring the Noise' on this day.

1993: Professional Tennis great, Arthur Ashe, passed away on this day. Mr. Ashe was the first African American player to compete in the International sport of tennis at the highest level of the game and was one of the most prominent players of his time. He also founded the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health before his death.

2003: The British documentary on Michael Jackson aired on ABC-TV's 20/20 and was introduced by Barbara Walters. 38 million folks tuned in to watch the two-hour special.

2007: Two-time Olympic medalist in track and field and first woman to compete for the US in five Olympics, Willye White, passed away on this day in Chicago, IL at age 67. (Photo: AP)
