Preserving Oakland’s black community with a Black Cultural Zone

Sep 26, 2018

Twenty years ago, black people made up 35 percent of the city’s population. Since then, there’s been an exodus of black residents from Oakland. Today the black population is just under 25 percent. And the numbers continue to decline.

Community activists want to preserve black culture and spaces in Oakland. They’re working on something called the Black Cultural Zone.

"The idea of this project says a lot about how Oakland is changing, what people are facing and how we're at a pivotal moment."

KALW Oakland reporter Jeneé Darden explains what this project is all about.
