Sights and Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. This week, host Jenee Darden sits down with writer and educator Vanessa Lewis to talk about three arts events happening around the Bay this weekend.
- Unbound Roots: A Paradigm for Intentional Healing, SoMArts Center in San Francisco
Unbound Roots is a multidiscplinary exhibition that's expanding the discussion on self-care to black wellness practices. The art reflects how mental, spiritual and community care are rooted in black wellness. The exhibit provides a space for generational healing and community engagment. Unbound Roots runs until April 21st.
- Book Launch for Juli Delgado Lopera's novel Fiebre Tropical, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Bindery in San Francisco
This poignant, funny novel is Juli Delgado Lopera's first. The story follows a 15 -year-old girl who immigrates from Colombia to Miami and finds her family thrust into the intensity of a local evangelical church. Then the main character falls for the pastor's daughters and tries to get closer to her. Lopera will be in conversation with Oakland author Carolina de Robertis to at the Bindery. This event will also feature a drag show!
- Dark Girls 2 Documentary Premiere, 8 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland
This is the sequal to the 2011 documentary about the impact of colorism on black girls and women. D. Channsin Berry is back in the director's chair again but says this film aims to chronicle "the triumph and beauty of dark and light skin women and girls." This premier event will be followed by a Q &A .
Vanessa Lewis is the founder the Reclaim Ugly movement.
