"Six by Ten" shows the devastating impact of isolation through stories from solitary

Right: Portrait of Heather Chapman and her son Nikko Albanese, by Christine Shields

Six by ten feet. That’s the average size of solitary confinement cells. Tens of thousands of people incarcerated in the United States linger in solitary confinement for weeks, months, or even decades.

On this edition of Your Call, journalist Mateo Hoke will discuss Six By Ten, a new book that examines the darkest corners of this country’s mass incarceration culture and shows how solitary confinement inflicts lasting consequences on families and communities far beyond prison walls.

Guests:

Mateo Hoke, writer, oral historian, mixed-media journalist, and co-editor of Six by Ten: Stories of Solitary

Heather Chapman, narrator in Six by Ten, and mother of Nikko Albanese an inmate currently in solitary confinement in the medical wing of a correctional facility in Florida
