The Spot: To be in the water at night

Robin Galante

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

To a Distant Continent,” produced by Vanessa Lowe for the podcast Nocturne, originally aired February 2016.

A lot of us, but not all of us, witness the deepest hours of night with our eyes closed and our minds and bodies slumbering. But some of us experience some of our most triumphant and challenging moments in sheer darkness, wide awake and working, while the world around them is fast asleep.

Long-time and long distance swimmer Lynne Cox.

Recording breaking, long distance swimmer Lynne Cox is one of those people. She spoke with Vanessa Lowe, producer and host of the Bay Area-based podcast Nocturne, a show that explores the often overlooked and undisclosed slices of life that happen before the sun rises. Lynne shared stories of the world she knows, in the dark of the night, and in the middle of the ocean.

Take a look at Lynne's swim map, and find out more about her work at her website.

You can find more stories from the other side of the sun at nocturnepodcast.org. You can also subscribe to the show via iTunesand Stitcher. Nocturne is a part of podcast network The Heard, and you can find a lot of great, indie podcasts at theheardradio.com.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tosca, KentSparling, and Tacocat
