Bay Bridge designer fears leaks are damaging main cable // San Francisco Chronicle

"The cable that holds up the new Bay Bridge eastern span is vulnerable to corrosion because of rainwater leaking into its anchorages, the bridge’s lead designer has warned Caltrans — a threat that the agency has previously downplayed on the $6.4 billion project."

Stanford University touts numbers of student sexual assault that appear far lower than other schools -- activists balk // Contra Costa Times

"At Stanford University, a 1.9 percent rate of sexual assault among undergraduate and graduate students is the lead statistic being trumpeted in news releases and all-campus emails sent by President John Hennessy. What the news release doesn't readily reveal is that almost half of female undergrads reported a serious incident of sexual violence -- a rate that is comparable with most other ranking universities nationwide."

Oakland Cambodian man set to be deported for nonviolent drug case // East Bay Express

"In August, the Express published a news story about the case of Chea Bou, an Oakland man who faced deportation for his involvement in a federal drug case. Immigration reform activists have rallied to Bou’s defense, noting that he has family that depends on him here, and his legal case involved no accusations of violence..."

"But he’s going to be deported anyway."

More families are living in SROs, and the conditions inside are making them sick // SF Weekly

"The number of families living in SROs in San Francisco has more than doubled over the past decade, according to a new report from Single Room Occupancy Hotel Families United..."

"The neighborhoods that have seen the biggest jump in SRO family occupancies are Chinatown (14 percent) and SoMa (5.4 percent), while the Mission saw a decrease of nearly 9 percent."

Oakland's Black cowboy parade spurs interest // SF Gate

"The daylong festival at Oakland’s DeFremery Park included food booths, historical discussions, live music and little-known stories about the black pioneers who drove cattle, settled towns, forged trails, roped steers and rode the range. It was a day to remember and celebrate the largely forgotten history of the African American cowboy, who by some estimates made up as much as one-quarter of all the cowboys in the Old West."

Backyard brawlers bring act to San Jose // San Jose Mercury News

"The group's genesis came nearly two decades ago and this year the wrestlers began gracing a new stage at the Ritz nightclub and concert venue in downtown San Jose. On Saturday, UGWA will hold its 11th annual Devil's Night event, sort of a seasonal conclusion of storylines drafted by founder Anthony Trevino, 32."
