The Spot: Kindness to Strangers

Sep 10, 2017

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

The Kindness of Strangers,” produced by Kirsty McQuire, December 2012.

On this episode, we present two stories told by two different women with advice for everyone on how to make a positive impact on the lives of those near you and those whom are far away.

After riots spread through her adopted hometown of London and across other English towns and cities in August 2011, Bernadette Russell embarked on a mission to complete "366 Days of Kindness" to help bring balance to the harshness she saw creeping up all around her.

This piece was produced by Kirsty McQuire as a part of the Global Story Project, with support from the Open Society Foundations and presented by PRX.

Honoring Alan: Why the West Can't Shut Out Refugees,” produced by Jarrod Sport, February 2017.

In September of 2015 the world took notice of the escalating refugee migration crisis when the body of three-year-old Alan Kurdi washed up on a Mediterranean shore in Turkey. After the photo of Alan went viral, for a while, much of the international community seemed committed to supporting Syrian refugees seeking asylum in the west, but now, campaigns of nationalism in Europe and the United States have pledged to cease the immigration of people seeking security and opportunity.

In February 2017, right after President Trump signed an executive order halting all refugee admissions in the U.S., Tima Kurdi, Alan’s aunt, spoke with radio producer Jarrod Sport, and in her own words, she shares why the West has a responsibility to help refugees fleeing warfare and destabilization in the Middle East.

Since Alan’s death, at least 8,500 people have died or disappeared while attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
