The Spot: Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

"Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins," produced by The Kitchen Sisters for the podcast Fugitive Waves, January 2016.

In the 1950’s, DJ Bill Hawkins was a sensation, and inspired a generation of DJs and radio announcers. There’s one piece of Hawkins’ legacy, though, that you won’t find, anywhere, and that’s a recording of his voice. The Kitchen Sisters go along on a journey with Bill Hawkins’ son, William Allen Taylor, as he searches for his father’s voice.

Fugitive Waves is a podcast showcasing some of the Kitchen Sisters’ best audio documentaries, which include longer-form productions of some of their earlier radio stories, like this one about Bill Hawkins. Find more stories from The Kitchen Sisters, including more from their Lost & Found Soundseries at their website.

If you have any of your own stories about making connections through the radio, similar to how Tony Hawkins connected with William Allen Taylor, tell us about it! Drop a line at thespot@kalw.org.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, Louis Jordan, Patrice Holloway, and Melvin Davis.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
