‘Controle’ by Raissa Punkki ~ OUT of Site ~ New Century Chamber Orchestra ~ Cole Porter & Paris
This week on Open Air, KALW’s radio magazine for the Bay Area Performing Arts, host David Latulippe welcomes Finnish choreographer Raissa Punkki to talk about her dance company punkkiCo’s new work Controle, her response to the current era of escalating social media frenzy and its “fleshless interaction.”. She is joined by composer and sound designer Aaron Gold.
Punkki’s latest work explores what it means to be in control, between control, out of control, and by extension: what it means to set controls for oneself. Controle runs from March 15-17 at San Francisco’s ODC Theater (3153 17th Street).
Also stopping by is San Francisco-base artist Seth Eisen, to discuss OUT of Site, a two-part, performance-driven walking tour through the streets of San Francisco, along landmark locations from the City’s rich queer history, with site-specific performances, combining theater, dance, video, puppetry, drag and live-music.
Part one takes place in North Beach, March 10-25, and part two in the Tenderloin, May 12-27. Eisen will be joined in the studio by three the performers from OUT of Site, Sienna Williams, Earl Alfred Paus and J.P. Jones, who will sing live on the air.
From the New Century Chamber Orchestra, we meet with executive director Philip Wilder, who shares details about the ensemble's collaboration with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra in a special one-night concert, on March 16 at 5:30 pm at San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, with music by Mozart, Grieg, Bartók, and Max Richter.
Plus, Open Air’s regular contributor and critic at large, Peter Robinson, discusses an upcoming event at the Sausalito Library titled ‘We'll always have Paris’, on March 29 at 7pm, an exploration of how French capital has attracted many artists, writers, composers, and movie makers over the years, and he has a conversation with Noah Griffin, founder and artistic director of the Cole Porter Society, about Porter’s connections to the City of Light.
