Raise Your Voice! comes from High School and College-age students around America demanding change after the school killings in Parkland, Florida.  Amalia Fleming from Morro Bay sings at KALW this afternoon at 5. Members of Raise Your Voice! will perform at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass next weekend.  You can hear her performance on our local music player and select A Patchwork Quilt to play.

Duck Baker live on A Patchwork Quilt Today at 5pm

Finger style guitarist Duck Baker will be Kevin Vance's guest on A Patchwork Quilt. He's played for many years recording for such instrumental guitar-friendly record labels as Kicking Mule and Shanachie's Guitar artistry series.  Duck has lived, performed, and is admired all over the world, from the Bay Area to the U.K. and back again. He has a new CD of never before heard recordings from the 1970s and a show at the Freight later this month.

The Kingston Trio on A Patchwork Quilt

The Kingston Trio will perform live on A Patchwork Quilt this Saturday at 5pm.  No, not the original Kingston Trio from the 1950s and ‘60s.  Josh Reynolds, son of original founding member Nick Reynolds, now heads up the Trio, along with his cousin Mike Marvin, who was also raised in Sausalito by Nick Reynolds — and their boyhood friend and musical collaborator Tim Gorelangton. The Kingston Trio are coming through the Bay Area, performing at Yoshi’s in Oakland at Jack London Square this Friday evening. Saturday afternoon, they’ll appear at the KALW studio with Kevin Vance.

Conspiracy of Venus is an all women’s a cappella vocal ensemble based in San Francisco, California. Under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride, the women of CoV interpret her daring and inventive arrangements of contemporary music, ranging from the classic (Joni Mitchell’s "Big Yellow Taxi"), to the cutting edge (Bjork’s "Possibly Maybe"), with dazzling technical verve and tons of personality. The group’s repertoire also includes works by David Bowie, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, The Pixies, Bill Withers, Rufus Wainwright, and Roger Miller. 

Radio Flor -- Cascada De Flores

Members of Cascada De Flores, a Bay Area folkloric group specializing in music from Mexico and Cuba, will be Kevin's guests this Saturday on A Patchwork Quilt.  They have a new album, Radio Flor, re-enacting the golden age of radio, when everyone you heard, announcers, musicians, actors, poets, and storytellers were always performing live from the studio.  Imagine listening to la estacion XEW in Mexico City or La Cadena Azul en La Habana, Cuba in the 1930s and '40s.

It's Bob Dylan's 73rd birthday today.  We'll celebrate.

We'll hear his songs sung in Women's voices, such as Joan Baez, Odetta, Nanci Griffith, and a singer from Bhutan named Lhamo Dukpa.

Kevin's first guest will be singer/songwriter /guitarist Garrin Benfield.  You can learn more about his music at his website, http://www.garrin.com/.  Then the final hour, we'll celebrate Pete Seeger's birthday.  He would have been 95.  David Dunaway, Pete's biographer, will come in and share a chapter from his radio series about Pete, "How Can I Keep From Singing?" and announce a new website called "Remembering Pete Seeger".
