SOLSTICE, the Bay Area a cappella all-womens ensemble, returns to KALW’s Folk Music & Beyond this Saturday at 3 pm (PST) for a live performance. Solstice will perform songs from the their latest release “Sing When The Dawn Is Dark”, an inspiring collection of music for difficult times.

Kitka, the renowned Bay Area Balkan women’s ensemble, performs live 3 pm this afternoon on Folk Music & Beyond.

Kitka celebrates their 40th season with their upcoming Wintersongs concert series. This year’s theme is “Weathering the Storm.” On today’s show, they will share some highlights of their forthcoming performances.

Folk Music & Beyond: Windborne Live!

Join us for some wonderful four-part harmony singing by Windborne this Saturday at 3 pm on KALW’s Folk Music & Beyond!  Windborne is a young a cappella ensemble based on the east coast.  They specialize in close harmony singing, shifting effortlessly between drastically different styles of traditional music within the same concert.  Their songs cover folk, old-time/American roots, gospel, and Balkan.

Join us today at 3 pm (PDT) on Folk Music & Beyond for a sneak peek at next week's San Francisco Free Folk Festival.  We'll feature some of the festival headliners on our show--Aki Kumar, aka "The Only Bombay Blues Man", the a Capella trio Yes M'am, and ballad singer-guitarist Kray Van Kirk.

  The song you’re hearing now is by Ed Sheernan, being sung by Yes M’am! This a-cappella trio (Mary Hill, Amelia Hogan, Margaret Miles) sings traditional folk songs, along with music that might never be considered “folk” … until you hear their version. Yes M’am! takes part in the 41st annual San Francisco Free Folk Festival, which is happening this year at Everett Middle School on Saturday, June 10 from Noon until 10pm.

The T Sisters are a contemporary folk band from Oakland, California. Songwriters Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen are joined on stage by upright bassist Steve Height and Andrew Allen Fahlander on mandolin and guitar. The vocally-driven five piece will perform at the Sixth Annual “Backyard Concert” taking place Saturday afternoon, July 25th, in Santa Rosa. Doors open at 4pm.

 

Finest Kind Trio Live this Saturday

Finest Kind, the a cappella trio from Ottawa, Canada will be our in-studio guests this Saturday 3 pm on "Folk Music & Beyond."  They are among Canada's leading singers in the "Anglo-Celtic" tradition.  Their harmony vocals have been called "soaring and glorious" by fellow Canadian musician David Francey. They've been together since 1991 and their repertoire spans British Isles, Celtic, American roots, Canadian, Hank Williams, Carter Family, Rudyard Kipling, old time, bluegrass, and everything in between.

The singers you’re hearing are known as Con Alma. This vocal jazz ensemble, which has been active in the East Bay and San Francisco since 1999, has been described as “fresh and full of subtle surprises.” 

They’re performing Saturday (01.21) at Avonova in Oakland, starting about 8pm.
