It all started a couple of years ago, when a happy-go-lucky guy I swim with named Joe Omran showed up at Aquatic Park one day in a foul mood. Thirty years ago, he bought a small grocery and deli on the western edge of Nob Hill called Le Beau Market. Now he wanted to open a café nearby. Just a little one.

IIM, Calcutta

I have to admit when I heard the Rev. Jesse Jackson was in town, my first thought was “What’s Jesse Jackson doing running around Kolkata?”

Rev. Jackson made the expected stops – mother teresa’s grave. School for poor children. But then he headed to the IIM, the Indian Institute of Management, one of India’s most coveted business schools, charged with minting the next generations of CEOs and COOs.

San Franciscans have always loved hats, since the first half of the 20th century and earlier. Streets were often a sea of hats: rounded bowlers, creased fedoras, wide-brimmed ladies’ hats ornamented with flowers and birds. The hat’s popularity today is a shadow of what it once was, and local hatters have all but disappeared. But there’s at least one place where the local hat-making tradition goes on – behind a nearly 100-year-old storefront in the Richmond District.

SFUSD SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2014

For information about this program, please contact Darlene Cardenas at 415-379-7769 or cardenasd@sfusd.edu

Hosting an intern is one of the single most important ways a business or individual can support students as they become young adults.  Providing perspective and guidance to a young person as they navigate to adulthood changes lives in addition to building brand recognition and improving the workforce of San Francisco.

Will unions in California lose their political influence?

Oct 11, 2012

Proposition 32 is one the most controversial and polarizing measures on California's ballot. Conservatives support it. Unions are fiercely against it.

The proposition is designed to prohibit contributions made by unions and corporations directly to political candidates. It will also stop unions and corporations from automatically deducting money from employees’ paychecks to pay for political activities.

On today's Your Call, we’ll continue our election coverage with a debate on Proposition 32. If it passes, it would ban unions and corporations from extracting money from employee paychecks for political campaigns.  Supporters say it gets “special interests” out of politics.  Opponents say it unfairly targets unions and leaves exemptions for corporations.  What do you want to know about Prop 32?  Join us at 10am PST or post a comment here.  What would true campaign finance reform look like?  It’s Your Call with Holly Kernan, and you.

Thanks to the incredible response from listeners during the Fall Membership Campaign, KALW now has nearly 12,500 active members.   As 77% of Local Public Radio’s budget comes directly from listeners, a growing base of individual supporters is critical to the station’s future.

The commitment and generosity of KALW listeners has significantly improved the station's financial standing over the past two years.  At the end of  FY2012 on June 30th, KALW's cash reserves stood at $343,272, up more than $200,000 from a year earlier.

On Today’s Your Call, we’ll have a conversation about the future of small business sector. According to small business association firms with fewer than 500 employees provide jobs for over half of the nation's workforce. How do the close ties of both major parties to big business shape their approach to small business?  Join us live at 10am PST or post a comment here. If you are a small business owner, what policies do you support? It’s Your Call, with Rose Aguilar and you.

Guests:

Jere Glover, the Executive Director Small Business Technology Council

On today’s Your Call, we’ll have a conversation with Hugh Sinclair, the author of Confessions of a Microfinance Heretic: How Microlending Lost Its Way and Betrayed the Poor. Sinclar argues that with a few exceptions, the $70 billion dollar industry is filled with corruption. What do you want to know about how this industry operates?  Join us live at 10am PST or post your comments here.  Have you donated money to a microfinancing institution? What will it take to ensure they actually help the poor? It’s Your Call, with Rose Aguilar and you.

Lorenzo Bynum has the “baller" build you might see on the cover of GQ, without the swagger. He’s clean-cut, 5’10”, wears two small earrings and has a muscular frame. It’s a Wednesday afternoon in Marin City, and the 23-year-old is digging frantically through a 10’ by 10’ closet. He’s hunting for a parachute large enough for a game with 15 third graders.

Wednesdays are busy days for Bynum. He clocks in at three part-time jobs: two hours directing elementary school children, two hours coaching track and field, and two hours coaching middle school boys basketball.

Terry Bradford, who was Celine Dion's duet partner for five years, has impressed me not just with his incredible singing and performing ability, and not just with his huge heart. It's easy to mistake someone with a big heart as being naive about the practicalities of how to make a living as a performer. That would, indeed, be a mistake. Terry is one savvy guy.

And Terry Bradford will be my guest on Work with Marty Nemko, Sunday June 10 from 11 am until around 11:30.  He'll share secrets of the trade and yes, you'll get to hear his truly compelling singing.

Michael Bush is a Bay Area Native who works with small, local businesses through a nonprofit called InnerCityAdvisors. He's developed a workshop called “The 8 Factors” to help businesses succeed. KALW's Holly Kernan sat down with Bush to talk about how to make it in a tough economy.

Smart Franchising

Apr 2, 2012

Might you like to be self-employed but are scared to start a business from scratch? A franchise can be tempting. Alas, too often, franchises fail.

Conversely, if you run a successful business, it can be tempting to franchise it. Perhaps you see images of money rolling in while others are running clones of your business.  Alas, there are governmental, legal, and other roadblocks galore.

Brian Jones' goal was never to run his own business. He always wanted an 8 to 5 job with benefits, and to retire as early as possible. That's not quite how it worked out. And no, it's not the typical rags to riches story.

He'll tell his story on Sunday, March 25, plus you can call in for a three-minute career makeover, on Work with Marty Nemko, Sundays from 11 am to noon on 91.7 FM, KALW San Francisco.

On today’s Your Call, we’ll have a conversation about the Supreme Court’s ruling, which allows corporations and citizens to spend unlimited amounts of money backing candidates. With the proliferation of so-called Super PACs and with so much cash flowing to both parties, how has politics been influenced by big money? Join us at 10 or email feedback@yourcallradio.org. What will it take to remove money from politics? It’s Your Call, with Rose Aguilar and you.
