Your Call: Weapons of Math Destruction

cathy_oneil-620x412.jpg

On the October 13th edition of Your Call, we’ll speak with Cathy O’Neil about her new book Weapons of Math Destruction.

O’Neil details how unaccountable big data is dictating some of the major decisions of our lives--whether we’re chosen for a job interview, what kind of college scholarship we receive, even who gets paroled. But this data is built on algorithms riddled with errors and is often built on biased human assumptions. In many cases, it reinforces systems where the poor and people of color don’t make the cut. What information is being collected about you? What can we do to take on what O'Neil calls a toxic cocktail for democracy? Tweet your questions and comments to @yourcallradio and join the conversation live at 10am with Rose Aguilar and you.

Guest:

Cathy O’Neil, former quantitative data analyst for the hedge fund D.E. Shaw, former organizer and facilitator with the Occupy Movement, and author of Weapons of Math Destruction andDoing Data Science
