The Spot: Bad Gigs & Great Birds

This week on KALW's showcase for the best stories from public radio podcasts and independent radio producers...

"Bad Gig," reported by Casey Miner for the podcast, Life of the Law. April 2015.

Life of the Law is killing it lately. They’ve recently added new editors to the team, and new producers, and the stories they’ve taken on, well, you won’t hear them anywhere else. In their latest episode, they take a deeper look at rights -- or lack thereof -- for folks who work from home.

Subscribe to Life of the Law via iTunes, and check out their story archive and blog at their website.

"Lord God Bird," produced by Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister at Long Haul Productions, 2005.

For many living in the Bay Area during this current boom, there are opportunities for lots of little bits of employment, which also come with extra risks. Now, I want to switch gears and introduce you to a small town that’s losing its younger populations to places with better job opportunities, and how the story of a bird is giving the community new hope.

This story is part of Long Haul Productions' song/story series. Long Haul releases most of their stories on their podcast, up now on iTunes. The song, "Lord God Bird," was written and performed by Sufjan Stevens. You can listen to the full song in the video below.

This week's episode featured music from: Black Moth Super Rainbow, David Crowell, and Arabb.

If you have a suggestion for a podcast or an audio project we should feature, please drop us a line at thespot@kalw.org.

Tune in next week for another episode of The Spot, only on KALW San Francisco.
