Public Art

What images come to mind when you think of public art? More than monuments, memorials and grand sculpture, public art is reaching out to engage its audience on a more human scale. How will this change how we experience art and what are some examples of public art that are setting the stage for what’s to come?

Guests:

  • Courtney Fink, Executive Director of Southern Exposure, a non-profit visual arts organization based in San Francisco that supports artists in the development and presentation of new work and ideas.
  • Jacqueline Francis, Art Historian and Senior Lecturer in the Program in Visual and Critical Studies and the Department of Painting and Drawing at the California College of the Arts and co-editor of an anthology about Romare Bearden, entitled Romare Bearden, American Modernist.
  •  Susan Pontious, Program Director of the Civic Art Collection and Public Art Program with the San Francisco Arts Commission, a department of the City and County of San Francisco. She directs the implementation of the City’s Percent-for-Art Program, which generates approximately $3 million annually from an allocation of the construction cost of city capital improvements. She also oversees the stewardship of over 4,000 art objects in the City and County’s collection.
